Climate Change, The Effect on the Electric Grid and Plans to Keep it Resilient

The climate plays a crucial role in the design and operation of the electric power system; understanding the effects of climate change can allow utilities to better plan and prepare for its future effects. To develop a better understanding of the impact from climate change United Illuminating (UI) recently performed its first Climate Change Vulnerability Study. This study, performed with assistance from the climate resilience consultant ICF, developed climate projections for UI’s service territory, assessed which equipment and climate hazard combinations are expected to be impacted the most, and then developed recommendations on ways that resilience to those effects could be built.
