A Quest For Justice: Americans in the Confederacy, Spring 2023

Professors Leslie Lindenauer (History) and Don Gagnon (Theatre Arts/Writing & Literature) will host their upcoming Spring 2023 Honors/American Studies/History course that will take students on the road for eight days in the American South, including Savannah, Charleston, Selma, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Atlanta!

Two components:

1) Seven course/class meetings throughout the semester

2) Eight days of travel throughout the South

Students will engage challenging materials that trace the effects of injustice and its originating forces, as well as its lingering and multivalent effects.  Meeting only seven times over the course of the semester, students will then travel for eight days throughout the former Confederacy to apply classroom learning to real-world sites where events depicted in our course material occurred.

The class will walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, visit former plantations where history has been corrected, tour historical monuments and archives, and experience local culture first-hand—the kind of Southern heritage tour that rewards hands-on, in-person involvement.

Classes: January 18 through May 5 (the course meets seven times, every other Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. beginning on January 18th)

Travel: May 16 – 23, 2023
