Excitement builds as Homecoming 2014 approaches
Week of events leading up to game has something for everyone

Image of 2014 Homecoming logoDANBURY, CONN. — The Western Connecticut State University Colonials, at 5-2, are looking forward to a great homecoming game against Worcester State on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014. But the excitement doesn’t start there. The entire university is gearing up for a week full of events leading up to the 5 p.m. game.

Friday, Oct. 17:

 

The WCSU field hockey team, under the direction of 10-year head coach Dani McDonnell, will take on Fitchburg State University in an important Little East Conference match at 7 p.m. at the Westside Athletic Complex on the Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. This will be the Colonials’ annual “Pink Game” to bring awareness to and raise funds for Breast Cancer Research. Free and the public is invited. The WCSU ice hockey team will host Army at 7:50 p.m. at the Danbury Ice Arena, 1 Independence Way in Danbury. Adult admission is $5; there is no charge for WCSU students, faculty and staff. For more information, go to www.wcsuhockey.com/.

The WCSU Department of Theatre Arts will present “Twelfth Night” in the Studio Theatre in the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus. Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” is the original take on sexual identity and the vagaries of love. It combines mistaken identity with the plights of a cross-dressing aristocratic woman and her missing twin brother, an intoxicated uncle and his foolish friends, a beautiful lady-in-waiting and all types in between. WCSU Professor of Theatre Arts Pamela McDaniel will direct. Performances will be at 8 p.m. on Oct. 17, 24 and 25; 2 p.m. matinees are on Oct. 18, 19 and 26. Saturday, Oct. 18:

 

“Corrugated Worlds: The Work of James Grashow” will be on exhibit Monday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m., in the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) on the Westside campus. Free and open to the public.

 

WCSU will host the Tri-State Weather Conference from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Science Building on the Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The purpose of the conference is to enhance education, professional development and communication among private and public sector meteorologists, researchers, educators, students, emergency management officials and weather enthusiasts. The WCSU women’s rugby team will take on Salve Regina University at 11 a.m. on the Recreation Field on the Westside campus. Free and the public is invited. For more information, send an email to shanksa@wcsu.edu.

The WCSU women’s tennis team will battle the UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs for a chance to make the six-team field for the upcoming Little East Conference Tournament at 1 p.m. at the Westside Courts on the Westside campus. A faculty recital featuring Russell Hirshfield on piano will be at 8 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus. Hirshfield will perform works by Frederic Chopin, Piet Swerts, Alexander Scriabin and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Also featured will be the premiere of “Sundials” by WCSU Professor of Music Kevin Jay Isaacs. Tickets are $20 for the public and $10 for senior citizens and non-WCSU students, plus fees. Sunday, Oct. 19:

The WCSU Department of Recreation will host the Homecoming “Run or Dye” Fun Run at 10 a.m. at Ives Concert Park on the Westside campus. Advance registration is $10 for the public and free for WCSU students. Day-of registration is $15.For more information, visit www.wcsu.edu/recreation/.

The WCSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will host a free “Haunted Halloween Walk” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Campus Center on the Westside campus. The public is invited to come in costume to enjoy the haunted walk, face painting, pumpkin painting and candy. Donations of non-perishable items will be accepted. Tuesday, Oct. 21:

Dr. Eva Berger will discuss “War as Routine: Photojournalism and Cultural Values in Israel” at 6 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the Midtown campus. Berger teaches media history and criticism at the College of Management Academic Studies in Rishon Letzion, Israel, where she has also served as dean. She has been a frequent commentator in Israeli media about issues relating to media, public relations and film history. Free and the public is invited. The WCSU field hockey team will take on intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University at 7 p.m. at the Westside Athletic Complex on the Westside campus. Prior to the start of the game, the Colonials will recognize women’s assistant soccer coach Shaun Bailey, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this summer. Wednesday, Oct. 22:

The Women’s Center of Greater Danbury and the Delta Gamma Phi sorority will hold a “Take Back the Night” event to raise awareness about domestic and sexual violence at 8 p.m. in Warner Hall on the Midtown campus. The WCSU Percussion Ensemble, conducted by David Smith, will perform at 8 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus. Free and the public is invited.  

 

Thursday, Oct. 23:

Artist/Curator/Writer Richard Klein will discuss his work at 11 a.m. in Room 144 of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus. Free and open to the public;  presented as part of the university’s Master of Fine Arts slide lecture series. For more information, call (203) 837-8403.  

WCSU will present the Midtown Coffeehouse at 8 p.m. in Alumni Hall on the Midtown campus. The coffeehouse will include open mic performers at 8 p.m., followed by the opening act, Redleg Husky, featuring WCSU alumna Misa Giroux; and the featured act, alumnus Derek Waldron, at 9 p.m. Free and the public is invited. The WCSU Student Government Association will host “The Return of the Bonfire” at 8 p.m. in the Commuter Parking Lot on the Westside campus.  

 

Saturday, Oct. 25:

WCSU will host Homecoming Tailgating from noon to 5 p.m. in the Commuter Parking Lot on the Westside campus. The cost is $10 per carload or $50 per tent space. Pedestrians are free. Open to WCSU faculty, staff, students, alumni and parents only, and guests must be 21 or over to consume alcohol.

The WCSU Alumni Association will host an Alumni Hospitality Tent from 2 to 5 p.m. across from the Westside Athletic Stadium on the Westside campus. The tent will be open to WCSU faculty, staff, students, alumni and parents only. Admission is free. Beverage tickets will be sold in the tent, and guests must be 21 or older to consume alcohol.  

The WCSU Alumni Association will host a Kids Activity Tent from 2 to 5 p.m. across from the Westside Athletic Stadium on the Westside campus. Free and open to the children of WCSU faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni only.

WCSU’s Student Government Association will host a Street Fair from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Feldman Drive, to the side of the O’Neill Center on the Westside campus. Free and open to WCSU faculty, staff, students, alumni and parents only.  

The WCSU Alumni Association will host the Class of 1964 Golden Reunion Celebration at 4 p.m. in Room 218 of the Classroom Building on the Westside campus. The football team will host Worcester State University at 5 p.m. at the Westside Athletic Complex on the Westside campus. Admission is free for WCSU faculty, staff and students. The public is invited and tickets can be purchased at the stadium. Student-athletes will be collecting donations to raise awareness of breast cancer and funds collected will be donated to the New Haven Breast Health Center. The WCSU Student Government Association will present the “Kevin Hart Comedy Show” at 9:30 p.m. in the Feldman Arena of the O’Neill Center on the Westside campus. Doors will open at 8:30 p.m. General admission ticket prices are $50 for the floor, $35 for a seat back and $20 for bleachers, plus fees. Student ticket prices are $25 for the floor, $17 for seat backs and $10 for bleachers. Student tickets may be purchased in person at the Info Desks in the Student Center on the Midtown campus, or the Campus Center on the Westside campus. The public can only purchase tickets at www.wcsu.edu/tickets. Guests should park in the Fifth Avenue Garage on the Midtown campus the night of the event. All cell phones must be turned off during the performance.
