How does the university disciplinary process differ from criminal or civil court?

The university process is an administrative process, not a criminal court process. Although there are perceived similarities, the university process is very different.

Universities use the standard of proof of “preponderance of evidence” or more likely than not that a policy violation occurred.

Criminal proceedings use “beyond a reasonable doubt” (no question about the facts).
