Scholarships for Study Abroad
Anyone interested in the funding with an asterisk (*), please see any committee member listed here. The Fellowship Committee is a group of interested faculty and staff at WCSU working toward encouraging more WCSU students to apply for these fellowships. We will help you procure information and application forms and will make ourselves available to consult with you on your applications to the fellowships below. In addition to the scholarships below, students are also eligible for scholarships through the WCSU Foundation.

The Boren Scholarships and Fellowships *:
The Boren Awards provide funding of up to $20,000 per student for one year of study abroad through the US National Security Education Program to study languages and cultures that are less commonly taught in US schools and/or are of vital interest to US national security. Either undergraduates or graduate students may apply. Applicants must be US citizens. Information can be found at http://www.borenawards.org/
The Fulbright Scholar Program *:
The Fulbright program is a broad program of scholarships for study abroad that awards about 7500 new grants annually for undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members. Chiefly of interest to WestConn students are the Fulbright US student program, which funds one year of study abroad for about 1500 college seniors or graduate students. Within this program is the Fulbright Teaching Program, which places students in schools as assistant English teachers. Information can be found at https://www.cies.org/
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship *:
This scholarship selects 12 scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 for one year of graduate study offered by any college or university in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: academic excellence, leadership, and a sustained commitment to service and community. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship *:
The aim of this scholarship is to provide funding for graduate study for those interested in pursuing a career in public service. The competition is open only to those in their junior year of undergraduate school, and provides up to $30,000 toward a graduate degree, as well as help in getting admitted to a graduate school of your choice and help placing you in a job after you’re done. However, those selected are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving Truman funds. Scholars who do not meet this service requirement, or who fail to provide timely proof to the Foundation of such employment, will be required to repay funds received along with interest. The Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholar Program *:
This program gives up to $50,000 per year for up to six years of study to deserving low-income college seniors and recent college grads (up to five years out of college). The James Madison Fellowship *:
This fellowship is for graduating seniors or graduate students who intend to pursue a career in teaching American history or political science. The fellowship funds up to $24,000 for two years of graduate study, after which fellows are required to teach for at least two years on the secondary school level in history or social sciences. Marshall Scholarship*:
The Marshall Scholarship Committee selects 40 senior undergraduate students each year from across the United States to study at the graduate level in the United Kingdom in any field of study. The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens with a 3.7 or better GPA who will graduate before leaving for the UK or have graduated in the previous two years. The scholarship pays all expenses, including living expenses, for Marshall Scholars to study for two years (extendable to three years) at prestigious UK universities such as Oxford, King’s College, and the London School of Economics. http://www.marshallscholarship.org/
New England – China Scholarship Program:*
Funds up to one year abroad in China studying the Chinese language and other disciplines. It includes tuition and fees and students may take classes in English, Chinese or both. Up to 9 full year, full time scholarships will be available each year for the next 3 years (2009 – 2012). The Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowships *
The Harriman foundation awards three fellowships per year to fund summer internships at the US Embassy in London, the US Embassy in Paris, and the Office of the Secretary of State in Washington. ThinkSwiss offers 15 scholarships for a research stay in Switzerland. This scholarship program supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields.
The Rhodes Scholarship *:
The Rhodes scholarship pays for 32 students from across the United States to study for a period of two to four years. Rhodes scholars now typically apply for the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Oxford, but can also apply for a second B.A instead. In addition to having a pristine academic record, Rhodes applicants must show extraordinary service to their community. The Rhodes pays all expenses for study plus a generous stipend. The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award *:
This award (named after the CEO of National Grid, not the political scientist), gives $10,000 to a graduating senior to pursue one year of public service, either domestically or internationally. You propose a program of public service to them. About three fellows are selected yearly out of 70-80 applicants. More information can be found at https://www.samuelhuntingtonaward.org/
The Scoville Peace Fellowship *:
The Scoville fellowship committee selects about three to five students per year and pays for them to come to Washington, DC to work as full-time staff members at a participating organization of their choice. Participating organizations include top NGOs and think tanks working on peace issues, such as the Stimson Center, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Arms Control Association, and many more. The fellowship is open to graduating seniors and to graduate students. Non-US citizens are eligible to apply. More information can be found at http://www.scoville.org/

Lánzate! Give Flight to Your Success / Dándole Alas a Tu Success Program
The scholarship, sponsored by Southwest Airlines and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, provides roundtrip airfare to students who pursue higher education at a college or university outside of their hometown. To be eligible, students must be US residents over 18 and attend college away from their designated home. Applicants must also have a minimum 2.5 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Since the award will cover roundtrip airfare from the student’s hometown to the student’s university, both airports must be served by Southwest Airlines. Application deadline is APRIL 30 and applicants will be informed of the decision in August.
