After a remarkable run that included an undefeated season and conference championship, Head Coach John Cervino leaves the program before the 2000 season to pursue other coaching opportunities. Players have mixed feelings about the coach’s departure, with quarterback Matt LeFever describing the move as “disappointing” but going on to say that “[Cervino] has to do what’s best for him and his family, but I’m not really happy about it right now.” Wide receiver Brent Bardellini says of Cervino, “He’s the best coach I’ve ever played for.” Players expressed their wishes for Offensive Coordinator Bob Surace to fill the vacancy, citing his familiarity with the team and offense as a plus side. “But even then,” LeFever says of Surace taking over as head coach, “I don’t know how things will change…change is tough. I don’t know. I guess this whole thing hasn’t hit me yet.”
