AFFILIATED EVENT: OPERA IN THE BAROQUE PERIOD: Opera is a distinct creation of the baroque period around the early 17th century. With elaborate sets, costumes, lighting, acting, dancing and singing, it has remained one of the most ambitious genres in the standard canon of western art music. Join Dr. Gilad Harel, musicologist and music theorist, at 6 p.m. in the Farioly Program Room to explore operas by early innovators including Claudio Monteverdi, Henry Purcell, and George Frideric Handel. In these examples, we will see heroes from mythology and ancient history realized in the form of a traditional baroque opera, an “opera seria.”
