Victorian literature; the Bronte Sisters; Hardy; the English novel; American short fiction; genre studies; literary translation, creative writing–all with a transcultural/translingual focus.

Among Dr. Qi’s scholarly interests is Victorian literature, especially Thomas Hardy. In addition to papers in journals and conference presentations, Qi has published translations of A Pair of Blue Eyes, The Well-Beloved, and coauthored Voices in Tragic Harmony: Essays on Thomas Hardy’s Fiction and Poetry. Dr. Qi’s creative works have appeared in Feminist Studies, AMBIT, the Connecticut Review, and other journals. He is the author of When the Purple Mountain Burns: A Novel, Red Guard Fantasies and Other Stories, and many other books. His screenplay Purple Mountain has been optioned for production and his play Twin-Sun River: An American POW in China was staged by the prestigious Shanghai Theater Academy (April 2009). His latest books are The Bronte Sisters in Other Wor(l)ds (as principal editor and contributing author; 2014) and Western Literature in China and the Translation of a Nation (2012), both by Palgrave Macmillan. He is currently working on book project titled Adapting Western Classics for the Chinese Stage. Dr. Qi is the recipient of CSU Board of Trustees Research Award (2007).
