Admission
Applications for the Online Counselor Education Program are due January 10. Selected candidates are invited for interviews beginning in late January. Candidates will receive notification of admission by the end of February. Cohort members begin courses during the first summer session (mid-May) and generally take six credits each long semester and each summer, plus elective courses. The program actively recruits candidates who represent a variety of cultures, ethnicities, races, genders, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic classes.
Requirements:
Admission to the program is competitive and is based on the criteria listed below. In order to be matriculated, the candidate must:
- Submit transcripts from all colleges/universities attended regardless if a degree was earned.
- Achieve a minimum of 3.0 GPA for all undergraduate courses. If a candidate does not meet the 3.0 GPA, under advisement from the graduate office, an alternative assessment will be provided.
- Complete a Bachelors Degree program (or its international equivalent) that includes a general-education distribution of courses in English, mathematics, science, social and behavioral sciences, foreign language, and fine arts.
- Submit an essay demonstrating proficiency in English proficiency that sets forth the reasons for wanting to enroll in a counselor education program, and emphasizing relevant experiences, and suitability for online learning. Online Essay Form
- Submit three letters of recommendation from individuals able to testify to the student’s suitability as a prospective counselor. Recommendation Form
- Be interviewed by the program’s faculty admissions committee, which will assess the student’s academic background and personal attributes that might affect the student’s performance as a counselor.

Digital Requirements
The MS in Counselor Education Program at WCSU is three-year online program offering candidates two concentrations of study, School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The following digital requirements are necessary for successful participation in the program.
Technical Knowledge Requirements
Students are expected to be proficient with installing and using basic computer applications, navigating the internet, and can send and receive email attachments. Further students are expected to have familiarity with the use of digital meeting applications such as Zoom, and the ability to use a web camera and microphone to successfully participate in the Counselor Education Program.
Authentication Requirements
WCSU a two-factor verification process for system log ins. Two-factor verification helps you to use your accounts more securely because passwords can be forgotten, stolen, or compromised. Two-factor verification uses a second factor like your phone to make it harder for other people to break into your account. All users will need the following pieces of information:
- WCSU student email
- Password
A cell phone installed with Microsoft “Authenticator” App

Blackboard
The Counselor Education Program at WCSU uses Blackboard as our classroom interface. Blackboard supports the following browsers:

Mobile browsers are also supported for the Original experience. Older themes are not supported on these browsers even though users may have success using them. Blackboard Appand Blackboard Instructor are supported native apps for mobile and tablet devices that interact with Blackboard Learn servers. These apps may have their own device requirements.
A known Microsoft Edge issue has caused problems attaching and submitting open Microsoft Office files in Blackboard Learn courses. To help prevent file submission problems, if you use Microsoft Edge, Learn warns you that you should close files before uploading them. The message only displays the first time you encounter a file upload workflow in a Learn session.
Blackboard Learn does not require any other browser plug-ins.
