SURF Eligibility
WCSU’s Biology SURF is open to both WCSU and non-WCSU undergraduate students. All students must be U.S. citizens or legal residents.
Eligibility Requirements for WCSU Students
To be eligible for a SURF you must:
- Be a continuing undergraduate student
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
- Completed 30 credits at WCSU or at another school in a biology or related program AND have successfully completed General Biology I and General Biology II courses (BIO103 and BIO104 or equivalent).
- Be registered for the Fall semester before beginning your SURF project.
- Not be under any academic or disciplinary sanction.
Eligibility Requirements for Visiting (Non-WCSU) Students
To be eligible for SURF, you must:
- Be a continuing undergraduate student and eligible for fall term registration at a U.S. accredited college or university.
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.0.
- Complete the second semester or third quarter at U.S. accredited college or university.
- Not be under any academic or disciplinary sanction.
- Students need to currently be matriculated in a degree-granting undergraduate program.
- Note: High school students who are co-enrolled in college courses are not eligible for this program.
Expectations
Upon receiving a SURF, students sign an agreement to fulfill the following requirements:
- Devote full effort to conducting the SURF project (min 30 hours per week).
- Participate in the project for the full ten-week period.
- Submit two progress reports approved by their mentors to the WCSU Biology SURF committee.
- Submit an abstract of their project to the WCSU Biology SURF committee.
- Submit a written technical report approved by the mentor to the WCSU Biology SURF committee.
- Present an oral presentation of his/her work in a public or scientific forum.
- Abide by WCSU Academic Honesty Policy.
