Ancell School of Business : Ancell Bylaws, Policies and Procedures

Policy on Classifying Faculty as Participating or Supporting

Approved by Faculty: ???? date

  • Participating Faculty: Participating faculty members are those whose involvement with ASB extends significantly beyond duties directly related to teaching. This may include participating in departmental, school, and university governance, curriculum development, advisement, and co-curricular activities.
    • The CBA requires that all full-time faculty engage in activities that will result in their classification as participating. Article 4.11.9.3 mandates that “productive service to the department and the university” be considered in all evaluations for annual reappointment, tenure, promotion or post-tenure professional assessment. Other CBA articles require that faculty keep at least five hours per week of office hours, subject to temporary increases during registration, and that they adequately advise students.
    • Part-time faculty may also be classified as participating based on their significant involvement, as evaluated by the FQC. Since the CBA does not require extraneous duties for part-time faculty, the case for classification as participating must be based on clear evidence of impact. As with full-time faculty, classification as participating requires a significant contribution to departmental, school, and university governance, curriculum development, advisement, and co-curricular activities.
  • Supporting Faculty: Supporting faculty are those that are employed part-time and are assigned a maximum of two sections per term. They are expected to provide reasonable assistance to students enrolled in their sections, but do not otherwise participate in the school community.
