Friday, August 26

MOVE-IN DAY

T-SHIRTS
In order to prepare for your first of many traditions at WCSU, collect your Free commemorative Welcome Week T-shirt in the Midtown Student Center Theater before 1pm.  This T-shirt is a time to show pride in your new beginnings at Western! It's created new and unique each year for this special occasion. Wear the T-shirt during the "Entering the Gates" ceremony, at future sporting events, and on Western Wednesdays.

SHUTTLE UPDATE:
The WCSU Shuttle will run Friday through Sunday (8/26 - 8/28) between the Westside campus and the Midtown campus, leaving Westside on the hour starting at 7:00 a.m. and leaving Midtown on the half hour.  The last bus will leave from the Midtown Student Center at 11:30 p.m.
The regular schedule starts 8/29/16!

MEALS
Resident
Students have to bring their Student IDs in order to receive meals.  Commuter students meals are free, but they will need to give their names to the cashier in the cafeteria. 

9:00am – 12:00pm
Resident student check-in and move-in will take place in each student's residence hall.  Students need to move in during their appointed color-coded move-in time only!  For more information refer to the check-in email you received or check the Housing and Residence Life website.  Members of various student organizations and athletic teams will be available to assist with luggage.

Brunch at the Midtown Student Center Restaurant is free for family members. Meal plans start, so Resident Students need to swipe their card. Commuter Students are free Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (give Cashier your name). Brunch for all family members and commuters will be paid for by Orientation.

Commuter student check-in in the Student Center Plaza.  Commuter students do not need to be here early unless they want to take a tour or come for other activities such as the Alumni photo at noon.  Main activities for commuters begin with the line-up at 1pm.

Building Academic Success
-Parent Workshop located in the Student Center Room 201A/B
Is your student unsure about how to pick a major or questioning whether s/he has chosen a suitable major? How can your student get off to a good start at college? What should the game plan be for success? And speaking of success, how does your student find out about cooperative education/internship and career options? These questions will be addressed by representatives from our Academic Advisement Center and Career Development Center. Learn some tips for academic success; find out about assessments that can assist your student in choosing a suitable major; get important tips that will boost your student's chances for success, beginning the very first semester.

Alumni Legacy Photo - if one of your parents or grandparents is an alum, please join us on the steps of Old Main for a "Next Generation" photo - followed by an Alumni Reception in Warner Hall.

Assemble on the sidewalk in front of Old Main for the "Entering the Gates" ceremony which will begin at approximately 1:30pm.  Students are asked to wear their “WCSU Welcome Week” t-shirt which they receive in the Midtown Student Center.  (In case of rain this event will be cancelled).

University101: Western Life Hacks - this program will introduce a variety of programs and services that are important to student success at WCSU. An introduction in the Student Center Theater will start at 1:30pm and will be followed by a sequence of approximately ten different program/offices that are sponsoring information tables; here you will have the opportunity to speak with staff about their services. A raffle for a variety of cool prizes will be held at the end of the program for those who have visited each of the information tables.

Mixed-Race Mixtape -
Ives concert Hall and sponsored by the offices of University Relations and Multicultural Affairs.
Mixed-Race Mixtape is a play written and performed by Hip-Hop and rap artist Andrew "Fig" Figueroa, whose mother is white and father is Latino. Fig demonstrates what it is like to grow up with two cultures, neither of which fully accepts him. The backdrop is American society in the 21st century, and Fig's relationship with his college, police, his friends and family. Mixed-Race Mixtape speaks to all young people - those who are struggling to fit in and those who haven't recognized the pressures that some fellow students face. The cast takes time to talk with the audience after the performance.

'Asking for It' -
Ives Concert Hall
Come check out a live interactive theater experience presented by the Women's Center of Greater Danbury raising awareness and effecting social change utilizing professional and highly trained student actors in theatrical scenarios depicting real life situations. Act Out will present 'Asking for It' as part of WCSU's orientation week. 'Asking for It' is an exploration of sexual assault on college campuses. Facilitated by our educator, audience members are allowed to interview the actors, who remain in character throughout the presentation. This engaging form of socio-education opens lively and thought provoking discussions that force the characters and audience members to confront personal and societal views on the presented subjects.

Colonial Wars is the kickoff event to the yearlong series of events in the Chuck’s Cup program.
