DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University and the Women’s Center of Greater Danbury will host “‘Step Up’ Against Sexual Assault” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, in the courtyard of the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. WCSU students will decorate awareness flags that will be placed in an outdoor area near the Student Center. There will be raffles and refreshments for WCSU students only.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and “Step Up” is one of the ways that the university and the Women’s Center recognize the importance of this month.
Rayna Havelock, Women’s Center campus counselor/advocate at WCSU and event organizer, said, “This is our fourth consecutive year doing this event to bring awareness to campus and to the community that April is SAAM. Students will write a message of hope and encouragement for a survivor or a message of awareness on a small teal flag. These flags will then be placed on a small patch of grass outside the Student Center and stay for about two weeks. We have purple flags in the center of the teal ones and those represent all of the sexual assault survivors of the state university system in one year that are unreported.”
