DANBURY, CONN. — The Women’s Center of Greater Danbury, in partnership with Western Connecticut State University, will present the Clothesline Project, an event intended to raise awareness about sexual assault and domestic violence, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, March 19, 2018, in the lobby of the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, in the lobby of the Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury.
The Clothesline Project began on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to address the issue of violence against women. Since its origin in 1990, it has become a national event that happens at universities around the country. The project is a vehicle for women affected to express their emotions by decorating a shirt that will be hung in both WCSU student centers to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women.
The Women’s Center campus counselor/advocate at WCSU and event organizer Rayna Havelock said, “This wonderful event allows all students, faculty and members of the community to write on T-shirts with messages of hope for survivors or important comments about non-violence for all to see. It is a visual reminder of statistics and support for those affected. Hopefully, it stirs us to action. Most importantly, this project provides survivors with a venue to courageously break the silence and make us all aware. This Clothesline Project is a tribute to them.”
