Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we shut down some buildings during periods of high power demand?

WestConn is a partner in a program to provide power to critical customers during periods of high demand, such as heat waves. In return for an annual payment the university has agreed to shut the power to certain buildings within 30 minutes of notification that a regional energy emergency exists. The system is also tested annually.

Why don’t we shut down all the buildings?

Some buildings house critical functions like centralized computer operations. Others rely on mature power systems that must operate continually.
