Wheaton College (Ill.) Advances to Third Final
in Four Years
WestConn's Cinderella Season Ends At Disney's
Wide World of Sports
LAKE BUENA VISTA,
Fla. – The Wheaton College Thunder advanced to
the finals of the NCAA Division III Women’s
Soccer Championship with a 3-0 win over Western
Connecticut State University in the semifinals
at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
Wheaton, the nation's top ranked team, improves
its season record to 26-0-0 while the Colonials
conclude their season with a school-record 21
wins and respectful 21-3-1 mark.
Wheaton struck
first in the 34th minute when Libby Passiales
capitalized on a loose ball in the box following
a shot by Sarah Richardson. The goal was
Passailes’ 11th of the season, and gave the
Thunder a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
Richardson recorded her 21st assist of the
season on Pasialles’ first half marker.
Wheaton dictated play throughout the first half,
out-shooting the Colonials 12-0.
"We knew that if we gave up a goal in the
opening minutes, to such an experience team, it
would be deadly to us," said 11-year head
coach Joe Mingachos. "Jenna (Cappellieri)
did a great job and made the stop on the initial
shot on Wheaton's first goal, but it had someone
right there to put away the deflection."
Cappellieri made six saves in 86 minutes and
withstood 19 shots from the Thunder.
"There were games this season that our defense
made it easy for me and I didn't get to touch
the ball," said Cappellieri. "Today I knew
I wouldn't be able to fall asleep."
"Jenna kept us in the game in the first half and
her performance gave us momentum into the second
half, " stated senior defender Lindy Winchell.
"Although we were down, 1-0, we felt we could
play with Wheaton."
The Colonials, which did not get off a shot in
the first 45 minutes, were able to penetrate
Wheaton's defense after intermission and had
four good chances in the final stanza.
The Thunder were
not satisfied with a 1-0 lead and kept pressure
on the WestConn's defense before Taryne Lee
extended the their advantage to 2-0 in the 83rd
minute. After a long run down the left
side of the field, Lee deposited her
team-leading 27th goal of the season.
Jami Hermann scored her fifth goal of the season
in the 86th minute to give Wheaton the final
margin of victory at 3-0.
“We are very
happy to have come this far, but we are not
satisfied,” said Joe Minigachos. “We came
here to win a National Championship. Our
senior class took us to new heights, heights
that will be hard to match.”
Wheaton keeper
Kristin Eggert recorded her ninth shutout of the
season to lead the Thunder. She made one
save on the day.
Cappellieri finished with six saves before
yielding to Shannon Cawley for the final four
minutes. Cawley made one stop for the
Colonials.
The Thunder will defend its 2006 National Title
on Saturday at 2 p.m. Last season, Wheaton
defeated The College of New Jersey, 2-0.
Earlier on Saturday, the Lions dropped a 2-0
decision to Messiah College to set up tomorrow's
championship match.
“We are pleased
to make it through to the final,” said Wheaton’s
head coach Pete Felske. “I did not think
we looked sharp, and we all expected a better
performance. I give Western Connecticut a
lot of credit, it never stopped pressuring us.”
The Thunder, which extends their win streak to
44 games, will attempt to win its third title in
four years. They captured their first
championship in 2004 and have outscored their
opponents 98-6 in NCAA Tournament action over
the past four seasons.

WESTCONN WOMEN'S SOCCER TO PLAY FOR NATIONAL TITLE IN
NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
DANBURY, CONN. - (Nov. 19, 2007) - The Western
Connecticut State University women's soccer team make its first-ever
appearance in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship
Finals at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista,
Florida on Friday and Saturday, November 23 and 24. The Colonials
defeated Worcester State College, 2-1 in double overtime and
Hamilton College, 1-0 in the Sectional semifinal and championship
game, respectively, last weekend to earn the coveted trip to the
National Finals.
WestConn, 21-2-1 will face defending national champion
Wheaton College of Illinois (25-0-0) at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, shortly
after Messiah (22-0-0) takes on The College of New Jersey (21-0-1)
at 11 a.m. The winners of Friday's matches will meet on Saturday at
2 p.m. with the winner crowned 2007 National Champions.
WestConn, winners of 17 of its last 18 games, defeated the
Continentals, 1-0 this past Sunday on a goal by senior Molly
Desjarlais (North Windham, MA) midway through the second half
and the stingy WestConn defense shut down Hamilton College for the
victory. WestConn dominated throughout the game, out-shooting
Hamilton 18-4 and not allowing a shot on goal. Jenna Cappellieri
(Stratford, CT) registered her 11th shut out of the season. In
the sectional quarterfinals against Worcester State College on
Saturday, Amy Corchard (Monroe, CT) scored the game-winning
goal in the second overtime to lift the Colonials to a 2-1 victory.
Junior forward Catherine Nathans (New Fairfield, CT) leads
WestConn with 17 goals and seven assist for 41 points. She netted
the first goal in Saturday's 2-1 double-overtime victory over the
Lancers in the Sectional semifinals. Kim Crayco (Bolton, CT)
follows with 14 goals and 30 points. Sophomore midfielder Cassie
Barbaresi (Bridgeport, CT) has seven goals and a team-high 14
assists on the year. Eleven of Barbaresi's 14 assists have come in
WestConn's last 14 games, a stretch in which it is 13-1.
Defensively, senior keeper Cappellieri has a minuscule 0.53
goals-against-average and has made 99 saves in 24 outings. She has
11 of the team's 16 shut outs, including the blanking of Hamilton,
without having to make a save, on Sunday.
The defense is bolstered by Caitlin Boyle (Brookfield, CT),
Lindy Winchell (Wethersfield, CT), Amanda Genova (New Milford,
CT) and Heather Garrity (Rocky Hill, CT) in the back
third. WestConn has out shot its opponents 558-245 and have allowed
just 99 shots on goal.
This fall marks the first time WestConn women's soccer has advanced
beyond the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Colonials
advanced to the Round of 16 back in 2001 when only 32 teams were
invited to the NCAAs. They have appeared in the NCAAs seven times,
1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, and the past three campaigns.
On November 3rd, WestConn won the Little East Conference Tournament
with a 2-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University to earn
an automatic berth into its seventh NCAA Tournament (1997, 1999,
2000, 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2007).
Other notes:
WestConn's softball team advanced to the
NCAA Division III National Championships in 2002. The Colonials'
men's basketball team advanced to the Elite 8 back in 1990.
Both semifinal games and the national
championship game will be available on a web cast. Simply go to

WESTCONN ADVANCES
TO NATIONAL FINALS
WITH WIN OVER HAMILTON
Molly Desjarlais scores game's only goal at 27:54
from the desk of Rachel M. Rosten - Williams SID
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (Nov. 18) - In yesterday's Sweet 16 game Western
Connecticut saw its one-goal lead slip away with less than two
minutes remaining in regulation before sealing a victory in overtime
against Worcester State. Today the Colonials saw a few defensive
slip-ups in the final 15 minutes of play but avoided overtime and
held on to defeat Hamilton College by a score of 1-0. Western
Connecticut advances to the NCAA National Finals in Lake Buena Vista, Florida
and will play Wheaton (Ill.).
Western
Connecticut was tentative early on, and head coach Joe Mingachos
contributes the sloppy play of the first 20 minutes to nervous
energy. "I think it was the nerves that hit us in the beginning and
we were a little overexcited, " he said. "We knew coming in to this
game that Hamilton was a quality team and we would have to play a
near perfect game. I'm just happy we got the job done."
Hamilton
could not take advantage of the Colonials' poor play early on, and
when Western began to play quality soccer midway into the first
period, its entire offensive attack shut down. The Continentals
mustered four shots on goal in 90 minutes, while Western's offense
really turned on the heat. Mingachos' team took 13 shots in the
first half, and five in the second, to put intense pressure on the
Hamilton defense.
It was
Molly Desjarlais who found the back of the net for the Colonials at
the 27:54 mark. Angela Wozinak laced the ball to the far right post
where both Desjarlais and teammate Kim Crayco waited to locate the
ball. Crayco's foot found the ball but kicked it up in the air, and
Wozinak capitalized on the deflection by heading the ball into the
opposite corner for the 1-0 lead.
Hamilton
thought they had tied the game with 15 minutes left in the period
off an Anne Graveley corner kick. The kick appeared to be heading
out of bounds, when suddenly the Hamilton fans and bench reacted as
the ball was in the back corner of the net. The referee initially
signaled that it was a goal, but following a conference with the
assistant referees, he ruled no goal arguing that the ball had
rolled in through a hole in the net.
The rest
of the game Western Connecticut dominated time on the ball, and
created great opportunities to score. Had Hamilton's Caitlin
McGilley not been at net, the score would have certainly been more
lopsided than it was. McGilley played a tremendous game, tallying
nine saves in ninety minutes of play. Despite a slight breakdown in
the final minutes, Western Connecticut kept Hamilton out of the
penalty box to hold on for a win.
At the
end of the game, Mingachos had difficulty finding words to describe
how he felt over his team's place in the Finals and said, "I have no
idea what to expect. This is really uncharted waters for us. I'm
just excited." Mingachos will wade into some uncharted waters
himself, as he promised his girls to shave his head if they advanced
to the Finals earlier this weekend

SOCCER AWARDS ANNOUNCED
from the desk of Jack Holleran - LEC Director of
Communications
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Western
Connecticut State University earned three of the conference’s four
individual awards this afternoon when the Little East Conference
announced its annual end of the season honors and all-conference
teams. Junior forward Catherine Nathans, senior goalkeeper
Jenna Cappellieri, and Joe Mingachos were named Offensive
Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Coach of the
Year, respectively. Keene State freshman striker Katie Bradford
was tabbed Rookie of the Year.
Nathans became
just the second student-athlete in the conference’s history to win
consecutive Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year
awards and third in Western Connecticut State University’s program.
The New Fairfield, Conn. product led the conference circuit in
points (35), goals (14), and game-winning goals (7), while sharing
third place in assists (7). Nathans scored a season-high five points
at Rhode Island College on Sept. 29. She was selected the Little
East Conference Offensive Player of the Week once on the campaign.
Cappellieri is
the first player in Little East Conference history to repeat as the
defensive player of the year. The Stratford, Conn. native sat atop
the conference standings in goals against average (0.59) and
shutouts (9), while second in save percentage (.879). Cappellieri
backstopped a stifling Western Connecticut defense, which allowed
just 0.60 goals per game and recorded a conference-high 14 shutouts.
She did not allow a goal in 11 straight appearances, a streak
spanning between Sept. 22 and Oct. 27, 2007. Cappellieri was
recognized as the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the
Week twice.
Bradford is just
the third Keene State College student-athlete to be named the Little
East Conference Rookie of the Year. The Lebanon, N.H. product ranks
sixth in the conference in points, registering nine goals and four
assists for 24 points. Bradford recorded a season-high five points,
including two markers, against Southern Maine on Sept. 15. She was
honored as the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week twice.
Mingachos led
Western Connecticut to its second straight Little East Conference
Tournament Championship and seventh in the program’s history. The
Colonials posted an overall record of 17-2-1, including a 5-1 mark
in the conference. He led his charges to the top-ranked offense,
averaging three markers per game, and defense, allowing just 12
goals all season. Mingachos was also named the 2006 Little East
Conference Coach of the Year.
Western
Connecticut placed a conference-high eight student-athletes on the
all-conference teams, including six on the top squad. Eastern
Connecticut State University and Rhode Island College each earned
