Western falls to Sacred Heart, 135-74, in final home meet of the season


DANBURY, CT (Jan. 28) — The Western Connecticut State University women’s swimming and diving team concluded its home dual-meet season with a 135-74 loss to Sacred Heart University Saturday afternoon at the O’Neill Center pool.

First place finishers for Western were sophomore Danielle Leprine (New Fairfield, CT) with a :26.28 in the 50 yard Freestyle, senior Nicole Olmestead (Southbury, CT) with a score of 160.85 in the 3-meter diving, and freshman Dani Core (Goshen, CT) who captured the 1-meter diving with a 186.22.

Finishing in first place for Sacred Heart were junior Amy Nunes (Seekonk, MA) in the 1650 Free (19:21.71), freshman Malvina Reinhold (Gothenburg, Sweden) in the 100 Free (:56.82) and 200 Free (2:00.92), junior Liz Bennett (Fairbanks, AK)  in the 200 Individual Medley (2:18.91), senior Meghan Bailey (Walpole, MA) in the 200 Butterfly (2:14.77) and 500 Free (5:30.72), junior Haley McGill (Old Lyme, CT) in the 200 Backstroke (2:14.96), and senior Laurie Casado (Queens, NY) in the 200 Breaststroke (2:33.61).  The 400 Medley Relay team of McGill, Casado, Bennett, and Reinhold finished first with a 4:12.59, while the 200 Free Relay team of McGill, junior Rachel McGrath (Dorchester, MA), Bailey, and senior Allison Thurston (Berlin, CT) captured first in 1:49.36.

With the loss, Western’s dual-meet record falls to 2-5 on the season.  The Colonials return to the pool on Saturday, February 4th, when they travel to Westfield State University for their final dual meet of the 2011-12 season.  The meet is slated to begin at 1:00pm.
