Western women even conference record with 2-0 win over RIC
DANBURY, CT (Oct. 6) —
The Western Connecticut State University women’s soccer team dominated play from start to finish, taking a 2-0 win over Little East Conference rival Rhode Island College at the Westside Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
Western got on the board first when just over ten minutes had been played. Freshman Megan Dixon (Plainville, CT) curled a beautiful corner kick from the right side that almost wrapped around the post and into the goal, but a Rhode Island College defender managed to keep the ball just outside the post. On the corner kick that followed, senior Tracy Sales (Cumberland, RI) lofted a perfectly placed pass to a waiting Kelsey Chacho (Plainville, CT) who headed the ball past the RIC keeper for a 1-0 Western lead. Western finished the first half with a 20-2 advantage in shots, but Anchorwoman keeper Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) made 13 saves to keep the score 1-0 at intermission.
At the midway point of the second half, sophomore Sarah Menta (Newington, CT) and junior Ariana D’Aurio (Cheshire, CT) executed a nicely played two-on-one for Western’s second goal. Menta attacked the RIC defense on the right side, drawing the lone defender and the keeper before sending a sharp pass across the box to D’Aurio who delivered the ball to the back of the net for a 2-0 Colonial lead. After 90 minutes of play, Western’s final margin of victory remained 2-0.
For the game, Western held a commanding 34-5 advantage in shots, and also had an 11-2 edge in corner kicks. Western keeper Jamie Trayer (Oakville, CT) made four saves to earn the win, while Maia, who was tested often, recorded 19 saves in a losing effort for Rhode Island College.
With the win, Western’s season record now stands at 8-3-1 and 2-2 in the Little East Conference, while Rhode Island College falls to 1-8, 0-4 in the LEC. The Colonials return to action Wednesday, October 10th, when they host a non-conference matchup with Scranton University. Game time is slated for 7:00pm.
