UMass Dartmouth women claim 1-0 victory over LEC rival Western
DANBURY, CT (Sep. 22) —
The UMass Dartmouth women’s soccer team scored the game’s only goal midway through the second half of play to claim a 1-0 victory over Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut State University at the Westside Athletic Complex Saturday evening.
Neither team managed to generate a serious threat on goal in the game’s opening minutes, but with 15 minutes played Western freshman Camille Lawson (Newington, CT) dribbled the ball between two UMass Dartmouth defenders, but her shot from 15 yards was handled easily by the Corsair keeper. Ten minutes later, junior Ariana D’Aurio (Cheshire, CT) raced past the Corsair defense with the ball, but her shot was also fielded cleanly by the UMass Dartmouth keeper. After 45 minutes of play, the score remained tied, 0-0
At the 62:30 mark in the second half, D’Aurio again raced past the UMass Dartmouth defense, this time on the left side of the field. As she angled toward the goal, D’Aurio fired a shot that was saved by a diving Corsair keeper to keep the game scoreless. UMass Dartmouth broke the scoreless tie in the game’s 76th minute on a ball that was misplayed by the Western defenders.
The Corsairs played the ball into the Western end of the field and as a Western defender attempted to clear the ball, it deflected off a UMass Dartmouth player. The deflection caught the Western keeper and defenders off guard and when the ball landed unexpectedly in front of UMD’s Hannah Millea (Sutton, MA), the left half of the goal was completely undefended. Millea quickly delivered the ball into the back of the Western net for a 1-0 UMass Boston lead. That score held up through the game’s final minutes, giving UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 final margin if victory.
For the game, Western held a slight 11-10 advantage in shots, and also had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Western keeper Caitlin Avery (East Hampton, CT) made seven saves in a losing effort, while Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA) recorded six saves to earn the victory for UMass Dartmouth.
With the loss, Western’s season record now stands at 5-2-1 and 1-1 in the Little East Conference, while UMass Dartmouth moves to 5-1-1, 2-0 in the LEC. The Colonials return to action Tuesday, September 25th, when they travel to play Clark University. Game time is slated for 6:00pm.
