Western opens Little East Conference slate with 18-5 win at UMass Dartmouth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA (Mar. 31) - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Western Connecticut State, 18-5, in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Saturday.

Western Connecticut took an early 2-0 lead with goals from junior midfielder Emily Brooks (Kingston, NY/Kingston HS) and senior attacker Brianna Mitterando (Mastic Beach, NY/William Floyd HS) in the opening four minutes of play. The Corsairs cut the deficit in half with a goal from junior attacker Brittney Enos (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth HS) at the 25-minute mark of the first half. Trailing 3-1, sophomore defender Kathleen Landers (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) delivered a long pass behind the Colonials defense to an open Enos, who beat WCSU sophomore goalie Karli Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore HS) one-on-one, making it 3-2 with 21:01 to play in the first half. Western Connecticut pulled away from the Corsairs with five consecutive goals in a 10-minute span, powered by two goals from Mitterando, boosting their lead to 8-3. UMD added goals from freshman attacker Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and sophomore midfielder Taylor Corsano (Bourne, MA/Bourne HS) in the final minutes of the first half, cutting the WCSU lead to 9-4 going into halftime.

The Colonials continued their offensive surge in the second half. WCSU junior attacker Lindsay Gorman (Killingworth, CT/Haddam-Killingworth HS) scored less than 30 seconds into the second half, the first of nine Western Connecticut goals in the half. Colonials' junior attacker Devon Edwards (Islip, NY/Islip HS) had four goals in the final half. Friedland netted the final tally for the Corsairs at the 1:08 mark of the period, en route to the 18-5 loss for UMD.

The Colonials outshot UMD, 33-23. Junior goalkeeper Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 14 saves for the Corsairs, while Portnoy made 14 stops for WCSU.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 3-5 and 0-1 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while WCSU improved to 5-3 and 1-0 in the LEC with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Salem State Thursday. The Colonials will host Framingham State Wednesday.
