Brandt double-double leads Western past Eastern, 66-53

DANBURY, CT (Feb. 7) — Sophomore Sciarra Brandt (Thomaston, CT) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University women’s basketball team to a 66-53 victory over in-state and Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday evening at Feldman Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for Western was Little East Conference Rookie of the Week Caroline Brasa (East Hartford, CT) with 19 points.

For Eastern Connecticut, freshman Shannon McCourt (New Fairfield) led the offensive attack with 17 points, followed by freshman Kristina Forsman (Newington, CT) with 12 points, and senior Jaymie Sommers (Voluntown, CT) with 10 points.

Brasa got Western on the board first, but with five minutes played the score remained close with an 8-8 tie.

Freshman Danyelle Rodriquez (Willimantic, CT) scored five straight points for Eastern to give the Warriors a 13-10 lead, but at the midway point of the first half, the score was once again tied, 17-17. 

Eastern moved back on top by three, 24-21, following a pair of McCourt free throws, but the Western defense shut out Eastern over the final four minutes of the half to help the Colonials take a lead 28-24 at intermission.

The scoring remained close for the first seven minutes of the second half, with Eastern fighting back to even the score at 37-all. 

Western then went on a 15-5 run to lead by 10, and expanded that lead to 16 with three minutes remaining.

Brandt closed out the scoring for Western with one minute to play, and a layup by Sommers in the closing seconds made the final margin 66-53 in favor of Western.

For the game, Western held a 42-34 advantage in rebounds, and also had a 21-8 edge in assists. 

Western finished shooting 47.2% from the floor and 78.6% from the line, while Eastern hit 30.8% and 80.0%, respectively.

With the win, Western stands at 14-8 on the season and 6-5 in the Little East Conference. 

Eastern falls to 6-16, 2-9 in the LEC. 

The Colonials return to action on Saturday, February 11th, when they host Little East Conference rival Keene State.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.
