Western volleyball wins five set thriller at Baruch College

The Colonials from Western Connecticut State University defeated the Baruch College Bearcats in five sets in a non-conference women’s volleyball match played on Tuesday evening at the ARC Arena in New York City.
The Bearcats (1-3) tallied a 63-45 advantage in kills, but WCSU (2-2) finished the match hitting .375 in the fifth set, including rallying from a 10-7 deficit, to win for the second consecutive year in five sets over the Bearcats.
The visitors took advantage of early sloppy play to win the first set comfortably (25-18), but the Bearcats regrouped to win the next two sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-23. The Colonials edged the Bearcats, 26-24, in a pressure-filled fourth set and captured the fifth to even their season record at 2-2.
Thornton Paxton led the Colonials with 21 kills (60 attempts), while Jennifer Hogan totaled 26 assists. Five different players totaled double-digits in digs led by Shirley Rodriguez with 23.
Jessica Wu (18 kills, 14 digs) and Rebecca Peralta (15 kills, 16 digs) each notched double-doubles in the tough loss, while Lauren Hayden finished with 13 kills. Melinda Santiago dished out 54 assists and Nicole Lockwood had 11 digs.
