DANBURY, CT (Mar. 30) — After a rocky first inning, senior Magen Dargon (Trumbull, CT) dominated the visitors from Manhattanville College, helping to lead the Western Connecticut State University softball team to a double-header sweep, 5-2 and 7-4, Friday evening at Westside Field.

After walking Manhattanville’s lead-off hitter to start Game One, Dargon got the next two Valiant hitters to strike out looking.  Senior Ashley Dell (Huntington Station, NY) then sent a Dargon pitch deep to straightaway center field, giving the visitors an early 2-0 lead.

With the exception of a double in the fifth inning, no other Manhattanville runners reached base against Dargon for the remainder of Game One, as she closed out the complete-game win by setting the side down in order in five out of seven innings, including the sixth and seventh innings.

At the plate, Western did most of its damage in the third inning.  Back to back singles to start the inning by sophomore Jessica Caturano (Holbrook, NY) and senior Daniel Basciano (Holmes, NY), followed by a passed ball, put runners on second and third with no outs.  Junior Ashley Morris (Wolcott, CT) stroked a single to right-center, scoring both runners, and senior Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) followed with another single to keep the rally going.  Morris and Zilnicki both scored when junior Ali Russo (Danbury, CT) hit a double into the corner in right field for a 4-2 Western lead.  A failed suicide-squeeze attempt followed by two infield pop-ups ended the inning for Western, but Dargon had all the run support she would need.  Western added an insurance run in the sixth to make the final Game One margin 5-2.

In Game Two, sophomore Stephanie Moss (Brookfield, CT) picked up where Dargon left off, striking out the first four Manhattanville batters, and allowing only one base-runner in the first three innings.

For Western, Basciano and Zilnicki each scored in both the first and third innings for a 4-0 Colonial lead.  Senior Samantha Avery (Rocky Hill, CT) led off the fourth with a double to left-center, sparking another two-run Western rally.  Avery then led off the sixth with a single and a stolen base to help Western score its final run.

After threatening in the fourth, Manhattanville finally managed to push across two runs in the fifth, with the big blow, a triple off the fence in right-center, coming off the bat of junior Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario).

After getting the first out in the seventh, Moss gave up three singles and hit a Manahattanville batter, narrowing the Western lead to 7-4.  Dargon entered in relief and earned the save when Manahattanville’s final batter hit into an unassisted double play to Avery at first base.

Western, now 13-3 on the season, returns to action on Wednesday, April 4th, when it travels to play a non-conference double header against Springfield.  First pitch for game one is slated for 3:30pm.
