Western Connecticut sweep home opener against Westfield State

DANBURY, CT (Mar. 27) - The Western Connecticut State University softball team opened its home slate with a doubleheader sweep of Westfield State University, winning the opener, 11-0 in five innings, then scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh of a 4-3 victory in the nightcap at Westside Field.

In the nightcap, freshman pinch hitter Christine Bighinatti (Rocky Hill, CT) lofted a single over the out-stretched glove of Owls second baseman Breanne Bisceglia (Worcester, MA) to plate Ashlie Morris (Wolcott, CT) who reached on an error to lead off the seventh frame.

The Colonials, 11-3, took a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of their fourth innings when Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT) scored following a single by Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY).

Zilnicki finished the twinbill by going 5-for-6 with a pair of runs batted in and three runs scored. On the season, she is batting .583.

Westfield, 6-7, drew even with two runs in the top of the fifth inning Courtney Begin (Salem, MA) and Kelsey Carpenter (Barre, MA) hit back-to-back one-out singles then came around to score on when Western catcher Alison Russo (Danbury, CT) unleased a pick-off attempt at third base, down the left field line. Begin and Carpenter initiated the errant throw by attempting a double steal.

Magen Dargon (Trumbull, CT) earned the victory in both games and is now 9-1 on the season. In 11 innings of work, she allowed eight hits and one earned run while striking out 15 and walking four. On the season, Dargon has a a 0.92 ERA with 63 strike outs in 61 innings.

Kerry Alcott (Groton, MA) took the loss and falls to 1-3 on the season for the Owls.

In the opener, Western pounded out 11 hits and scored seven runs in the third inning to put the game away.

Kristen Ferrante (New Paltz, NY) went 1-for-2 and had a game-high two runs batted in.

Zilnicki went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.

Begin led the Owls by going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Madeline Tomich (Alford, MA) suffered the loss and falls to 5-2 on the season.

Western plays host to University of Southern Maine in its Little East Conference season opener on Saturday, March 31. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
