Western scores twice to claim victory over John Jay, 2-0

DANBURY, CT (Oct. 9) —  Second-half goals by freshman Cole Hyla (East Haddam, CT) and junior Matthew Martin (Bristol, CT) gave the Western Connecticut State University men’s soccer team its first multi-goal game of the season as the Colonials defeated John Jay 2-0 Tuesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Western controlled much of the first-half action, keeping the ball pinned in the John Jay half of the field the majority of the period.  The Colonials took six corner kicks in the half, compared to none for John Jay, and used those opportunities to generate eight shots.  The Bloodhounds finished the half with four shots, but all were long-range drives that were handled easily by Western keeper Komas Tsetsos (Waterbury, CT).  After 45 minutes of play, the game remained scoreless.
Western controlled time of possession to begin the second half and finally got on the board  with just over six minutes played in the period.  With the ball in the John Jay, Hyla charge a John Jay defender, stripped him of the ball, and then drove a low shot that beat the keeper to the left corner of the net, breaking a six game scoring drought by Western and giving the Colonials a 1-0 lead.

Fifteen minutes later, Western entered uncharted waters by scoring its second goal of the game.  Martin brought the ball down the right side of the John Jay defense on a dead run, curled around a Bloodhound defender, and ripped a shot that beat a diving keeper cross-cage for a 2-0 Colonial lead.  Western continued to attack the John Jay defense, but after 90 minutes of play, Western’s margin of victory remained 2-0.

For the game, Western held a 24-8 advantage in shots, and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.  Tsetsos finished with seven saves in collecting the win for Western, while John Jay keeper Steven Merino (Bronx, NY) made 14 saves in a losing effort for the Bloodhounds.

With the win, Western’s season record stands at 2-8-2, while John Jay falls to 5-7-3 on the season.  The Colonials return to action on Sunday, October 14th, when they host Little East Conference rival Plymouth State at the Westside Athletic Complex.  Game time is slated for Noon.
