Despite a 19-4 shot advantage, the Trinity College Bantams recorded a scoreless tie against the visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials in men’s soccer action this afternoon. Trinity moves to 3-1-3 overall with its second stalemate in a row while extending its unbeaten streak to four games. Western Connecticut is now 1-5-2 and snaps a two-game losing streak and a five-game losing streak against the Bantams.

The defenses dominated the first half, as Trinity managed the only three shots before the break, but Colonial junior goalie Jack Holub (Sherman, Conn.) made six of his 10 saves in the second half to preserve the tie. Western Connecticut nearly ended it in the final 10 seconds, hitting the cross bar from close, but Bantam sophomore goalie Jason Katz (Middleton, Mass.) beat the Colonial offense to the ball off the carom. Trinity’s closest chance came in the first overtime when a Bantam shot off the back of a Colonial defender bounced wide of the goal. Trinity senior captain forward Anthony El-Hachem (Vernon, Conn.) nearly beat Holub with just over one minute left in the second extra frame with a low, bouncing shot from the right wing but Holub barely knocked it away with his back foot.

Katz earned the tie in the Bantam goal but did not make save, as the Bantam defensive unit of junior captains Shaun McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) and Zachary Packer (Mansfield, Mass.), sophomore Kyle Johnston (Sagamore Beach, Mass.), and first-year Jack Vogel (Northborough, Mass.) held Western Connecticut without a shot in the first half and for both overtimes.
