POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (Sep. 5) —
In a fast-paced, free-flowing game, the Vassar College men’s soccer team defeated Western Connecticut State University 4-0 to maintain their undefeated record. Vassar allowed only five shots on goal in the win.
Throughout the game the Brewers showed off their offensive skill with many through balls and penetrating runs. The offensive pressure paid off as Vassar went on to outshoot the Colonials 24-7.
The Brewers struck first in the 17th minute, when junior defender Jake Rabin played a long ball past the defense to the feet of junior forward Rob Manukyan at the corner of the box. Manukyan drove into the box before playing a quick cross to sophomore forward Tom Weichert, who buried the ball in the lower right corner of the net. The goal was Weichert’s third of the season.
Vassar kept up the pressure in the second half, scoring again in the 64th minute when freshman forward Jordan Palmer directed a well-placed corner to senior defender Zander Mrlik, who headed the ball home to put the Brewers up 2-0. Junior forward Juliano Pereira created the opportunity when his shot deflected off the opposing keeper.
Pereira got a goal of his own in the 76th minute, when he capitalized on a direct kick opportunity to curl the ball into the upper left corner.
The final goal of the game was scored by freshman midfielder Gavin Jennings, who scored his first collegiate goal when he sent a direct kick over the wall and into the left side of the net. Immediately following the goal, Jennings ran over to his father, head coach Andrew Jennings, for a congratulatory hug.
Junior goalkeeper Ryan Grimme posted five saves for the Brewers, while Western Connecticut keeper Jack Holub (Sherman, CT) had nine saves.
The Colonials are off until next Tuesday when it travels to Westfield State University for a 7 pm non-league contest.
