Gillis leads big second half as Western tops Salem State, 9-6
Eric Small wins 18 of 19 face-offs
DANBURY, CT (Apr. 18) — Senior Ryan Gillis (Norwich, CT) scored four second-half goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University men’s lacrosse team to a come from behind 9-6 win over Little East Conference rival Salem State University Wednesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
In addition to Gillis’ four goals, the Western offense was led sophomore Ryan Foster (Ledyard, CT) and senior Raul Bourgeois (New Milford, CT) who each scored twice. Senior Raul Bourgeois (New Milford, CT) added a single goal for the Colonials. Senior Eric Small (Glastonbury, CT) owned the faceoff circle for the Colonials, winning 18 of 19.
For Salem State, senior Nate Arminio (Reston, VA) and freshman Corey Davis (Wakefield, MA) led the scoring with two goals each, while senior Ryan Gendreau (Danvers, MA) and senior Dave Patnaude (Beverly, MA) each scored once.
Davis opened the scoring for Salem State in the game’s fourth minute with an unassisted goal, and late in the first quarter Bourgeois took a pass from senior Mike Schoen (Tolland, CT) to make the score 1-1 after one.
With the Western offense sputtering in the second quarter, only managing three shots and scoring no goals, Amrinio scored a pair of goals for Salem State to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead at the half.
Western picked up the intensity on the offensive end in the third quarter, narrowing the margin to 3-2 on an unassisted goal by Foster and getting the equalizer from Bourgeois with just under five minutes to play in the period. Salem State broke through the Western defense late in the third, to reclaim the lead at 4-3 going into the fourth.
Gillis, Western’s leading scorer this season with 34 goals, tied the score at 4-4 off an assist from Foster with 12 minutes remaining, and for the next six minutes neither team could find the net. With 6:20 remaining, Gillis gave Western its first lead of the game, and then extended the margin 18 seconds later when he collected the rebound of a shot taken by Foster and beat the Salem State keeper for a 6-4 lead. Salem State’s Davis scored 30 seconds later to stop the Western run, but Foster only took 13 seconds to answer for the Colonials and put Western back up by two, 7-5. Szabo’s goal with three minutes remaining gave Western a little breathing room for the first time in the game, but Gendreau scored just 30 seconds later to bring the Vikings back to within two at 8-6. Gillis’ final goal with 27 seconds remaining in the game sealed the victory and a 9-6 final margin for Western.
Senior keeper Tyler Martone (Cheshire, CT) made 14 saves to earn the win in goal for the Colonials, while senior Kyle Tuneburg (Beverly, MA) made eight saves in a losing effort for Salem State, but only one in the decisive fourth quarter.
With the win, Western stands at 8-4 on the season and 3-1 in the LEC, while Salem State falls to 3-10, 0-4 in the LEC. The Colonials return to action on Saturday, April 21, when they travel to play Little East Conference rival Plymouth State. Game time is slated for Noon.
