Ryan Foster's overtime goal lifts Western over Vassar, 8-7

DANBURY, CT (Mar. 14) — Sophomore attack Ryan Foster (Ledyard, CT) scored the game-winning goal with 25 seconds remaining in the first overtime to lift the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory over Vassar College at The WAC on Wednesday afternoon.

Foster finished with a pair of goals while the Colonials, now 3-1 were led by Ryan Gillis (Norwich, CT) who had a hat trick and a pair of assists.

Andrew Bascom (Franklin, MA), Jason Szabo (Apharetta, GA) and J.C. Flaherty (Old Lyme, CT) each added a goal for the winners.

Vassar, now 2-2, were led by Jack Gross (Yarmouth, ME) who scored two goals and assisted on a trio of Brewers' tallies.

Max Herman (Flemington, NJ) and Matthew Pearce (Alpharetta, GA) closed out the goal scoring for Vassar.

The action started hot and heavy in the first quarter as both teams scored three goals.

The Brewers' Jeff Lee (Syosset, NY) registered the only goal before intermission, with 1:40 into the second stanza, to put the visitors up 4-3 at the break.

Gross gave Vassar a two-goal advantage, 5-3, when he connected with Herman on a man-up goal 45 seconds into the third quarter.

Western would then scored four unanswered goals, highlighted by a pair from Gillis, over the next 15 minutes. Gillis' team-leading 10th goal of the season gave the Colonials a 7-5 advantage.

Following Gross' fourth goal of the season, Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY) knotted the game at 7-7 when he and Pearce connected with 6:34 remaining in regulation.

Vassar controlled much of the overtime, registering four shots before Foster was led up field by Mike Schoen (Tolland, CT) in the closing seconds of overtime. Foster found the top left corner of the goal and tied Gillis for the team lead with 10 markers.

Tyler Martone (Cheshire, CT) made 14 for the Colonials while Andrew Nicol (Carmel, NY) turned away 17 shots for the Brewers.

Western will travel to Virginia Beach, VA to face Plattsburgh State this Saturday, March 17.
