Trailing 2-1 after a pair of McCarthy markers, the Colonials scored four-straight goals over a four minute span in the second period to take a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish. Flaherty and Gillis each had a goal and an assist to key the run.
McCarthy’s third goal of the half briefly stopped the surge, but Western answered with two more man-up goals inside of three minutes to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
Two more third period tallies pushed the Western lead to 9-3 entering the final stanza, where Castleton drew as close as 9-5 on Groot’s unassisted score with 6:18 remaining. Szabo was able to push the lead back to five with his second goal of the game, this one with an extra attacker, for the final margin.
The Colonials finished an impressive 5-for-8 with the extra attacker, and also killed off both of Castleton’s opportunities.
Tyler Martone (Cheshire, Conn.) finished with eight saves in the win, while Castleton freshman Eric Horsfield (Tolland, Conn.) was saddled with loss making eight saves through three periods. Senior David DeGhetto (Clifton, N.J.) allowed a single goal and had a save in the final period for Castleton.
