Ryan Gillis nets five goals in 10-1 win over Maritime College


DANBURY, CT (Mar. 9) - Senior attack Ryan Gillis (Norwich, CT) scored five goals and the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team evened its record at 1-1 following its 10-1 victory over Maritime College on Friday night at The WAC.

Gillis put the Colonials up 1-0 with his first goal of the season with 32 seconds remaining in the first quarter. He received a feed from freshman defenseman John Helwig (Orange, CT).

After the game went scoreless for the rest of the firs half, Western took a 2-0 advantage when Raul Bourgeois (New Milford, CT) deposited and unassisted goal, his first goal of the season, just 1:26 into the third period.

Maritime, 1-4, drew within a goal when Brennen Siele (Manorville, NY) scored his first marker of the young season 5:22 into the third stanza.

Gillis and Nick Foley (Walpole, MA) each added a goal in the third quarter to give Western a 4-1 advantage heading into the final session.

Gillis continued his tear in the final stanza, scoring a trio of goals. Mike Schoen (Tolland, CT) collected his first goal of the season, with 6:56 remaining in the game, and finished with a goal and an assist on the night.

Ryan Foster (Ledyard, CT), who scored all four of the Colonials' goals in their season opener, tallied his fifth goal of the season in the closing minutes to cap off the scoring.

Tyler Martone (Cheshire, CT) made 10 saves in goal for Western before yielding the duo of Chris Alexander (Swansey, NH) and Kevin Seery (East Lyme, CT) for the final 4:56.

Nick Barbuto (Seaford, NY) turned away 21 shots for the Privateers before Tyler Donovan (Oyster Bay, NY) came on for the final 4:56. He made three saves for Maritime.

The Colonials travel to Castleton State College for a game against the Spartans on Sunday, March 11. Game time is slated for 2 pm.
