Strong first half carries Keene State field hockey past Western, 5-1
DANBURY, CT (Sept. 29) —
The Keene State College field hockey team scored the game’s first three goals and never looked back as it beat Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut State University by the score of 5-1 Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Junior Aimee Donaruma (Hampden, MA) got Keene State on the board early in the first half when she scored after less than four minutes had been played. Ten minutes later, freshman Haley Dolan (West Brookfield, MA) score an unassisted goal when she collected the rebound from her own shot and punched it past the Western keeper. Two minutes later senior Kailin Billert (Center Conway, NH) added to the Owl lead, giving Keene State a 3-0 advantage.
Western finally got on the board when freshman Kristy Matasavage (Middlebury, CT) deflected a pass from senior Victoria Vitale (West Milford, NJ) to close the gap to 3-1. Keene State closed out the first-half scoring when Dolan scored her second goal of the game, giving the Owls a commanding 4-1 lead at the half.
Keene State didn’t take long to find the net in the second half. Billert scored her second goal of the game less than five minutes into the final stanza, for what would prove to be the game’s final goal. Midway through the second half, Western senior Deanne Mastrocola (Goshen, CT) appeared to score off a corner taken by Vitale, but the goal was waved off by the officials and Keene State’s final margin of victory remained 5-1.

WestConn’s starting keeper, Courtney Hearn (New Fairfield, CT), recorded eight saves in a losing effort, while Keene State’s Caitlin Davino-Drape (Hanover, MA) picked up the win and recorded five saves before giving way to freshman Meaghan Dwyer (Rutland, MA).
