Bill Walton begins his 19th season as Assistant Coach and Academic Advisor for the Colonials' baseball program. He serves both as outfield and first base coach.
Walton, the Chairman and Professor Emeritus of the Communication and Theatre Department at Western, has a storied baseball background.
His baseball scholarship at the University of Arizona was interrupted when he was taken into the United States Marine Corps. Upon return from the Marines, he played in the Nebraska professional league (now the Midwestern League) in Omaha.
As a result of injuries received while in the millitary he gave up playing. From there he moved to begin his coaching career.
He has coached at all levels of baseball including the four time Connecticut and Northeast regional Stan Musial champions "Byron Athletics."
In his four World Series appearances his teams finished as national runners up four times.
Walton has also coached American Legion and Babe Ruth teams winning regional and conference champions each year he participated. His American Legion team was Western Regional champions, and a Babe Ruth regional champion in 1990.
He coached Western Connecticut Nutmeg State baseball teams, where he won five gold medals at those games. The best baseball record to date in Nutmeg play.
He is a student of the martial arts, obtaining black belt status and teaching at locals Dojos.
His players that have gone on to play professional baseball are numerous and he looks forward to cultivating many more.
