Alex Iannone strikes out final four batters in victory over #23 Trinity College

HARTFORD, CT (Apr. 24) - Freshman lefty Alex Iannone (East Hampton, CT) pitched a complete-game, eight-strike out gem and the Western Connecticut State University baseball team defeated 23rd ranked Trinity College, 3-2 in Hartford on Tuesday afternoon.

Iannone struck out the final four batters in the game and is now 2-2 on the season. He allowed two runs, only one of them earned, on seven hits while walking two.

The Colonials, 14-18 overall, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Tim Nelson (Manchester, CT) singled to drive in Bill Eannotti (Shelton, CT), who led off the frame with a walk. With one out, Bobby Coyne (Clinton, CT) pushed Kyle Savo (West Haven, CT) for the winners second run.

Savo finished the night by going 3-for-4 and singled home what proved to be the game-winning run, an unearned run off Ben Goldberg, in the eight inning. Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) reached on an error to lead off the inning, moved to second on a single by Zach Dandrea (Wanaque, NJ) then touched the dish following Savo's base knock.

Robert Gau, who worked four and two thirds, suffered the loss for the Bantams, now 23-9. He is now 1-2 in his first season of collegiate baseball.

Trinity came into Tuesday's game ranked 23rd in the nation, fourth in New England and leaders in the highly competitive NESCAC.

The Colonials travel to Rhode Island College on Saturday for a double header with the Anchormen. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
