DANBURY, CT (Apr. 19) –   Senior third baseman Chris Alberto (Trumbull, CT) belted a two-run home run and the Western Connecticut State University scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to escape a close contest and defeat St. Joseph’s College of Long Island, 7-3 in the opener of a non-league doubleheader at Westside Field on Thursday afternoon.

Alberto collected his third save of the season after getting out of a self-inflicted jam in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap.

Junior Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) collected his 100th career hit in the opener and finished up the night going 5-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Colonials got on the scoreboard first when left fielder Scott Conetta (Garden City, NY) drove David Simone (Danbury, CT) in with a sacrifice fly.  It was the freshman’s sixth run batted in of the season.  Simone led off the inning with his third double of the season then moved over to third on an infield single by Bill Eannotti (Shelton, CT).

St. Joseph’s took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth when Charles Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) laced a two-run double over Conor Bierfeldt’s (Torrington, CT) head in right field to plate Rich Pecoraro (Hampton Bays, NY) and Brian Hannigan (West Babylon, NY).  Zilnicki later came around with the go-ahead run on a single by Mike Alisio (Westbury, NY).

Sophomore Connor Nolan (Shelton, CT) earned his first win of the season after a hurling complete-game five hitter.   He allowed three earned runs while walking three.

Joe Polite (Ronkonkoma, NY) worked four innings for the Golden Eagles.  He allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out one.  He did not fair in the decision.

Thomas Moore (West Babylon, NY) walked the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the fifth inning before yielding to Matthew Glotzer (Holbrook, NY).

The first batter Glotzer faced, Bierfeldt, singled through the left side to knot the game at 3-3.  Bierfeldt came in with the go-ahead run when Simone lined a shot through the box.

Sophomore short stop Jeff John (Trumbull, CT) drove in Kyle Savo (West Haven, CT) with a sharp single up the middle to start the scoring in the sixth.  John came in on Alberto’s round tripper.  Savo opened the inning with a double to right field.

Moore suffered the loss and is now 0-2 for the Golden Eagles.

In the nightcap, Zach Philippas (Seymour, CT) struggled in the first inning, walked three, hit another batter, threw three wild pitches but gave up just one run on a pass ball.  He stay in for three and two thirds innings allowing two earned runs on just one hit, struck out four and walked eight.  He left with the bases juiced.

Zack Taylor (Bethel, CT) came on to induce a ground out to second to end the fourth inning with the Golden Eagles pushing just one run across.  Taylor earned the victory after going two and a third of no-hit ball.  He walked just one and is now 3-0 on the season.

Alberto came on in the seventh to earn his third save of the season despite allowing a run and stranding the bases loaded after getting Hannigan to ground out to second base.

The Golden Eagles, now 18-17, left 11 runners on base in the nightcap.

St. Joseph’s starter Mike Napoli (Riverhead, NY) ran into location trouble in the second when he walked five and yielded one of the Colonials’ two runs on a pass ball.  Western scored its other run in that inning when John Kelly (Stratford, CT) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Zach Dandrea (Wanaque, NY).

Western scored two more runs in the third inning.  Bierfeldt led off the frame with a triple then scored when Dandrea reached on an error.  Dandrea eventually came around to score on a single by John Fracker (Sandy Hook, CT).
