Baseball opens season with 12-10 loss at Emory & Henry

EMORY, VA - (Feb. 24) - Junior right fielder Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) went 2-for-4 and belted a two-run home run in the first inning, but Western Connecticut State University could not come all the way back in its season-opening, 12-10 loss at Emory & Henry College on Friday afternoon.

The Colonials pounded out 10 hits with senior designated hitter Kyle Savo (West Haven, CT) leading the offensive attack by going 3-for-4.

Senior Zack Dandrea (Wanaque, NJ) got off to a quick start in his final season as he went 2-for-4 with a pair solo home runs for the Colonials.

The Wasps jumped out to a 9-2 lead after the third inning, but the Colonials drew within 11-9 after they scored six runs in the top half of the sixth inning.

Freshman right hander C. J. Sousa (Danbury, CT) struggled with a constant 25 mph win that blew in the early going. He gave up seven earned runs on seven hits over the first two innings. He struck out one and walked one and falls to 0-1 on the young season.

The Colonials face Emory & Henry in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 12 noon, but the forecast does not look much better for tomorrow.
