Miscellaneous Academic and Administrative Information

Pass/Fail
Students may elect to take a course normally offered on a standard (graded) basis on a pass/fail basis. Such a course may be used to fulfill elective credits only. Students must obtain approval from their dean within the first four weeks for full-semester courses or the first two weeks for courses scheduled less than a full semester to exercise the Pass/Fail option. Applications are available at the dean's office. A maximum of four free elective courses may be elected for Pass/Fail credit but not more than one course per semester.

Audit
Audit forms, to be signed by the course instructor, are obtained at the Registrar's Office. One must first be registered for a course before the grade option can be changed to audit. The student must meet any standards set by the instructor for a successful audit (e.g., minimum attendance). Deadlines are the same as for the Pass/Fail option.

Credit By Examination
It is possible to earn academic credit through an examination procedure. The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) offers the opportunity to earn credits in a variety of subject areas including accounting, economics, educational psychology, English literature and composition, foreign languages, history, humanistic studies, marketing, mathematics, natural science, psychology, and sociology. Additional subject areas are covered by other examinations. You may not receive credit for both taking a course and passing its equivalent examination. For information on what specific examinations are available to you, and details on University policy regarding credit by examination, contact the Office of Student Life, 837-8494.

Incomplete Grades
To receive an incomplete grade in a class, the student must request that grade from the instructor in writing on a form available at the Registrar's Office and from department secretaries. Incomplete grades must be made up within six weeks of the start of the semester the student is next in attendance or within one year if the student does not return. If the incomplete is not replaced by a grade by the instructor, it automatically becomes an "F" or the minimum grade approved by the instructor. Incompletes may not be removed by repeating the course.

Grade Changes
If a student wishes to question the grade received in a course, it is proper to raise that issue with the instructor. If the instructor believes that the final grade should be changed, he/she will recommend the change to the dean. In the instructor's absence, the department chairperson may act in his/her place. (A student may appeal a final grade. Information about this process may be found in the Student Handbook and the Undergraduate Catalog.)

Change Of Major
A student who desires to change his/her major from one department to another department must complete the appropriate form which is available in the office of the chairman of the new department.
