Department of Social Work focuses on helping the homeless

The WCSU Department of Social Work scheduled several events in the spring to bring awareness and help to the area’s homeless population. The culmination of their efforts was the “Uniting as One” event held April 13, 2012, in the Bill Williams Gymnasium.

The WCSU department of social work’s “drive committee” collected clothing and toiletries that were distributed at the April 13 event that provided the homeless population of Danbury with free services provided by 11 local agencies including: Paul Mitchell and David’s barber shop; the AIDS project; Green Chimneys; and LASO, the university’s Latin American Student Organization, which provided translation services as needed. Lunch also was served.

Social workers and social work students interested in advocating on behalf of the homeless also convened at the annual Beatrice K. Nemzer Social Work Symposium on April 4, at Western’s Midtown Student Center.
