Orientation Workshops – Handouts and Links

Last updated: June 22, 2017

Whether or not you are planning to attend the parent program during your son or daughter’s summer orientation, below are some useful handouts and links to other resources.  Feel free to peruse at your leisure.  And if you find that you still have questions, please feel free to call the individual offices or contact Ginny Diaz at 203-837-9700.

Parent check-in at orientation is between 12:15 and 1 p.m. in the Student Center on the Midtown campus.  Park in the White Street Parking Garage.  A schedule for the day will be handed out at check-in.

Parents have an afternoon program of informative workshops and are invited to stay for Conversations and Coffee and Cookies with faculty and staff in the Library around 4:30 p.m. afterwards.

We also recommend getting to know Danbury by having dinner in one of the many ethnic restaurants in the Main Street area afterwards.  The Danbury Green and Downtown Danbury are  just a 15-minute walk from campus.

International Student Exchange Program
Western is a member institution of ISEP which means our students can study abroad at other ISEP member universities almost anywhere in the world, paying only Western’s tuition, room & board plus travel expenses, international insurance, and the ISEP Fee.  Students can go for one semester or an entire year, but need to remember to apply about 6 months in advance of their travel to be considered within the priority pool of applicants.  Credits transfer as free elective credits only, unless otherwise arranged with department chairs.

Midtown Coffeehouse
The Midtown Coffeehouse was established in the fall of 2005 and has run continuously throughout the fall and spring semesters ever since.  Thus, it has become an event students can count on for their Thursday night entertainment – an hour of open mic followed by a featured performer or a themed evening of entertainment.  Lately a number of table games have been added to the line-up of free food, sodas, and coffee so that students have a chance to socialize while listening to the performances.

This site provides information and fact sheets for college parents, students and  college administrators. There are links for helpful tips for parents who are sending their child off to campus.  What should I be telling my child? Do they already know about alcohol?  What is the best information I can give my student?  What really goes on at college?  Parents expectations can influence a students’ behavior at school.
