Master of Arts in English - Degree Requirements

MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH - LITERATURE OPTION
(30 semester hours)

  1. completion of ENG 502 Critical Theory
  2. completion of ENG 506 History of the Language & Linguistics or ENG 517 Grammars of English.
  3. completion of the following:
    1. either Shakespeare or Chaucer (3 cr) and
    2. one other course (3 cr) in Early British Literature and
    3. one course (3 cr) in Early American Literature, and
    4. one course (3 cr) in Modern British and American Lit. and
    5. two English electives (6 cr) and
  4. completion of a six (6) credit thesis or two English electives (6 credits) and the comprehensive exam

MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH - WRITING OPTION
(30 semester hours)

  1. completion of four English Writing Courses (12 credits) and
  2. completion of the following:
    1. either Shakespeare or Chaucer (3 cr) and
    2. one other course (3 cr) in Early British Literature and
    3. one course (3 cr) in Early American Literature, and
    4. one course (3 cr) in Modern British and American Lit. and
  3. completion of a six (6) credit thesis

Note: ENG 502, Critical Theory, may count as a literature course; ENG 506, History of the Language & Linguistics, may count as a writing course, and ENG 585, 586, or 58x may count as either a literature or a writing course.

MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH - TESOL OPTION
(30 semester hours)

  1. completion of the following:
    1. ENG 506 History of the Language & Linguistics and
    2. ENG 515 TESOL Testing and Assessment
    3. ENG 516 TESOL Methodology and
    4. ENG 517 Grammars of English
  2. Completion of the following:
    1. one course (3 cr) in Early British Literature and
    2. one course (3 cr) in Early American Literature, and
    3. one course (3 cr) in Modern British and American lit. and
    4. one English elective (3 cr)
  3. Completion of a six (6) credit thesis or two English electives (6 credits) and the comprehensive exam

Advising
Students enrolling in the program must see the Graduate Program Coordinator for an entrance interview. The coordinator will then make a recommendation whether to accept the application, to reject the application or to accept it with conditions (i.e., students may be asked to make up deficiencies) and will forward this recommendation to the graduate office.
