Student Article Published in
The Oswald Review

A scholarly article by Jason Burger, a recent graduate from our BA in English program (May 2009), has just been published by The Oswald Review (An International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Criticism in the Discipline of English / University of South Carolina Aiken). Congratulations, Jason!  Written for an upper-level major authors course, the title of Jason's article is "The Natives and Their Returns in Thomas Hardy's The Return of the Native" (click here for the Fall 2009 issue of the publication, which contains Jason's article).

The study of English is central to a liberal arts education. The English Department at Western Connecticut State University is dedicated to providing students with a high-quality education in English language and literature. Our curriculum is designed to stimulate student curiosity and to reward critical engagement.

Our academic programs prepare students to enter fields where knowledge of texts, historical contexts, written and oral communication, and the powers of analysis and critical thinking are vital. While many of our students find themselves well-prepared to teach English in elementary and secondary schools and to pursue graduate study in English, the English major will help prepare students for success in any field, such as law, publishing, marketing, and advertising. English is indeed the degree for life.

Our website contains information about the department’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs, our courses, the faculty, and resources for students. If you need additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
