Phi Delta Kappa International
Phi Delta Kappa International is an education association, professional and collegial in nature, whose purpose is to promote quality education, in particular publicly supported and universally available education. Its purpose is accomplished through research, service, and leadership and promoted through professional relationships and partnerships with educators and other like-minded individuals and groups. Professional collegiality is fostered at individual, chapter, regional, national, and international levels. Governance is vested in the members and the International Board.

WCSU Chapter History
The Western Connecticut State University Chapter was founded on May 18, 1968, with the support of former President Ruth Haas. The organizing committee was headed by David S. Edelstein, with Harold Burke, Kenneth Gross, Stephen Lovett, William McKee, Carl Pettersch, William Rasor, Richard Rausch, Joseph Sanchez, Joseph Sauer, George Sharp, Theodore Toporowski, and Ernest Weeks. The organizing committee had representatives from the educational community and the college. Harold R. Burke was elected as the first President.
PDK Professional Activities 2005-06
October 12, 2005: Valerie Tutson, international folk storyteller, performed in the WCSU Student Center Theater, for the public and the WestConn community. Approximately 50 were in attendance. Dinner in the Faculty/ Staff Dining Room, Midtown campus Student Center.
November 12, the WCSU chapter Walk For Education was held in Rogers Park, South Street and Coal Pit Hill Road in Danbury, with 12 members and guests walking. Raised $1043, which was apportioned to the PDK International Educational Foundation, the Salvation Army for Katrina Hurricane relief, Ann's Place, the Hannahoe Children's Clinic, and to the WCSU Chapter for the scholarship fund and general administrative expenses. Three members from the Chapter in attendance at the PDK International Conference on Education in Chicago joined with conference attendees in the Walk.
On December 7, 2005, a dinner meeting was held at the midtown Student Center, with Bob McCorkle guest, Chairman of the Toys for Tots program of the Ridgefield U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Members brought unwrapped toys for distribution to needy children. Diane Quimby, Coordinator, News-Times newspapers in Education, was the featured speaker. Twenty-five members and guests were in attendance.
Received notification of the Chapter being awarded a $500 grant from PDK International for an honorarium for a distinguished speaker in recognition of the Chapter's achievement of 100% member contribution participation in the Educational Foundation. The Chapter will cooperate with Western’s Ed.D. program coordinator Marcy Delcourt and sponsor a speaker in 2006-2007. Pat Cosentino is our liaison to the Ed.D. program in arranging this event.
On February 3, 2006, Kay Campbell, Harold Burke and Dick Rausch met with President Schmotter and briefed him about PDK Chapter activities and requested office space and a small meeting area. The President was impressed with the Chapter activities and he approved Kay Campbell's plan for shared space in the Westside campus for meetings and a place to maintain the chapter history and other materials. The Chapter officers and advisor agreed that the President’s offer was most generous and would be a great advance in Chapter -University relationships.
On March 8, 2006, Laura Patterson, Language Arts Coordinator, and Paul Raider, Staff Developer, from Education Connection, spoke to 25 members and guests on the topic of Professional Learning Communities at a dinner meeting held at the Westside campus.
On May 10, 2006, Maria Driend, Literacy Coordinator, Cooperative Educational Services, will address the membership at a dinner meeting in the President's Room, WS 218. Frank Nappi, International District H Representative, will join us to discuss latest developments from International Headquarters and to assist in the induction of new members into the Chapter and in the installation of officers for 2006-2007.
