NEW PROCEDURES FOR ENTRY INTO CHE 110/CHE 120/CHE 111
- Placement exams are no longer required for entry into our 100-level courses - CHE 110 and CHE 120. Placement will be based on math SAT scores or math placement.
- For students who have not taken any chemistry at all or who have taken chemistry some time ago or who have math SAT scores of 350 or lower, we are still offering CONCEPTS OF CHEMISTRY in the summer 2014 and in the spring 2015 semester. A grade of B or better is required for advancement to CHE 110 or 120.
- For students with math SAT scores between 360 and 490, the new "SUPPLEMENTED" CHE 110S or CHE 120S sections are appropriate. These are 5-credit courses that include, in addition to the usual 3 hours of lecture and 3-hour laboratory session per week, a 1-hour recitation session during which the instructor will review concepts, answer questions, and work on homework problems. This recitation session is mandatory and is designed to help under-prepared students succeed.
- For students with math SAT scores of 500 or higher, or math placement into "MAT 101", or a grade of "B" in CHE 100, entry into standard CHE 110 or CHE 120 is suggested. (However, taking the supplemented version will not hurt!)
- Students who complete CHE 110S or CHE 110 with a a grade of C or lower, there is also a supplemented CHE 111S section (labeled CHE 198-01,02 for Spring 2015). Students with CHE 110 or CHE 110S grades of C+ or higher may register for the standard CHE 111 course.
- All students who complete supplemented CHE 120 or standard CHE 120 may register for CHE 121. There is no supplemented CHE 121.
