The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art has internship opportunities available for Spring 2019. They have positions open in the curatorial, education and archive departments (listed below). American Art Intern
The American Art intern will assist with collections research and interpretation to help develop ideas for future exhibitions on a wide-range of art historical topics and time periods, including history painting, portraiture, folk art, modernism, and surrealism; from the Revolutionary War to World War II. The intern’s duties will include researching paintings, sculpture, and works on paper in the permanent collection as well as identifying and researching artworks in other collections related to a specific theme, topic, or artist. The intern will create & maintain research files and maintain checklists for internal discussions with the curatorial, education, marketing, and fundraising departments.
Applicant: This position is open to undergraduate seniors and graduate students. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in one or more of the following: art, art history, American studies, English, American History. Experience with collections databases a plus. Excellent writing, research, and creative thinking skills will be required. This Internship is not limited to art history majors.

Education Resources Intern
The intern will support School and Teacher Program Manager with the organization of materials and resources for key School and Teacher Programs including Museum on the Move and Art & Writing. The Education Resources intern will also support communication about our programming to the public through Constant Contact and our Teacher Portal. Intern will help with the organization and execution of two Spring events: Evening for Educators and Hartford Youth Arts Renaissance.

Applicant: This position is open to undergraduate junior and seniors and graduate students. Preference given to students who have stated interest in Arts Administration, K-12 Education, or Social Work/Community Engagement. Candidate must have strong organizational, communication and writing abilities. Candidate must have a knack for digital/online platforms (Constant Contact, Mail Merge, and other digital platforms). Candidate must be comfortable working independently in a serious, focused office environment. Friendly demeanor, flexibility and sense of humor a plus.

1 position available. This internship is supported with a $1,200 honorarium.

Time Commitment: 4-6 hours, 1 day per week plus 2 required Spring evening/weekend events TBD.

Special Collections Internship
The library and archives of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art support the curatorial research and exhibition activity of museum staff, while providing reference resources to scholars, students, and the public. Special Collections Interns will help inventory, research, and describe library and archives resources to update the department’s records. Working closely with library and archives staff, interns will implement appropriate preservation procedures for special collections and historical materials. At the end of the term, interns are presented with the opportunity to write a short article describing their work for the Auerbach Library Associates Newsletter.

Applicant: This position is open to undergraduate sophomore, junior and seniors. The successful candidate will be a college sophomore, junior, or senior with a demonstrated interest in Art History, History, Library Science, or Museum Studies. Facility with Microsoft Word and Excel, research skills, and strong attention to detail required. Reading knowledge of French, German, or Italian preferred, but not required.

Cataloguing Internship
The library and archives of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art support the curatorial research and exhibition activity of museum staff, while providing reference resources to scholars, students, and the public. The Cataloguing Intern will be presented with the unique opportunity to assist with cataloguing the Auerbach Art Library’s full range of holdings, including scholarly monographs, exhibition catalogues, fine art periodicals, museum bulletins, and auction catalogues. Additionally, the intern will help update existing catalogue records.

Applicant: This position is open to graduate students. The successful candidate will possess both outstanding attention to detail and experience cataloguing library materials. Experience can include graduate level coursework and/or relevant work experience. Original cataloguing experience is desirable. Reading knowledge of French, German, or Italian is preferred, but not required.
