Welcome to the Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work at Western Connecticut State University, in keeping with the Mission of the University, seeks to educate a diversified student body, and serves as an accessible, responsive, and creative intellectual resource.

The Department of Social Work provides a quality of education that prepares informed, culturally sensitive, skilled generalist social workers, who will provide services that promote and strengthen the well-being of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, and that are consistent with the values and ethics of the profession.

The program operates dynamically in the context of the broad liberal arts education and the particular social service needs of the region.

Congratulations to Dr. Robert Veneziano on his retirement!

Dr. Veneziano began teaching at WCSU in the Fall of 2000. He has had a distinguished career here and his absence will be sorely felt in the Department of Social Work. He has been a major contributor to the growth and success of the Department during his tenure.

For the past nine years he has chaired the Department. During that time he has successfully shepherded us through two accreditation processes with the Council on Social Work Education. He has developed assessment models and techniques for program evaluation that have provided invaluable data for program development.
In the classroom, Rob delivered academic challenge tempered with a great sense of humor and equal parts kindness.   He has redesigned the required research course to make it more accessible and user friendly.  As a researcher, Rob has included students in his own research, and encouraged independent student research activities.  Rob has also been a leader in redesigning the capstone course to make it more assessment friendly and more engaging for students.

He has led the Department in becoming more technology savvy and has worked with faculty to raise the admissions standards for acceptance for junior and senior standing in the Department. During his tenure, both the faculty and the students we serve have increased in number.
In addition to his Departmental work, Rob has served on many significant University Committees, and was President of the Society for Cross-Cultural Research.  In that role, he chaired an international conference to which he brought two social work students.  In addition, he has presented several times at professional social work conferences.

Rob’s personal qualities of fairness, accessibility and high ethical standards have set a high bar for the department. Most of all, we will miss his sense of humor and grace. We all wish him a happy and fulfilling retirement.
