Institutional Review Board

Welcome to the Home Page of the WCSU Institutional Review Board (IRB).  On this page, you will find all of the materials & links necessary to submit your human subjects research for official review.

All WCSU IRB submissions must be submitted electronically as one email attachment to

We've recently streamlined the process, so now a complete proposal includes only two main components:

(1) Completed/Signed (by everyone involved) Proposal Form for

(2) CITI or equivalent Human Subjects training

Proposals with missing documents and/or not sent electronically as ONE file will not be reviewed.

For proposals that do not need a full committee review, please plan for at least 2 weeks of processing time during regular semesters, longer during the Summer. IRB approval must be obtained before data collection with human participants can commence.

The deadline for submitting a proposal requiring Full Review is, without exception, the first of the month for consideration at that month's meeting. Proposals submitted after the the 1st of the month will not be considered until the following month’s meeting.

  • The WCSU IRB does not meet during the school breaks (i.e., Intersession & Summer). All proposals for research conducted during the Intersession or Summer must be submitted to the IRB before the end of the prior semester.  During these times, responses to email inquiries may take a month or longer.

Quality applications are essential, as they directly affect the integrity of the research process.

      It is not the
role of the IRB to comment on design or to determine or improve the quality of research protocols (i.e., submitted proposals' methods), except insomuch as those methods affect the well-being, rights, and/or other protections of those involved in the research.
      As such, it is the
role of the researchers involved, particularly as representatives of WCSU, to
      (a) educate themselves regarding basic research procedures involving human participants,
      (b) submit complete proposals, with all necessary documents, and
      (c) submit proposals devoid of grammatical and typological errors (particularly on documents for participants).
Proposals that fail to adhere to these standards may not be reviewed.
WCSU's IRB approval of a protocol indicates that the proposed study maximizes protection of human participants involved. IRB approval does not indicate endorsement of a particular study.
