WCSU to host Hat City Debates

DANBURY, CONN. Western Connecticut State University will host the region’s annual debate team championships next month — attracting top teams throughout the entire Northeast.

WCSU’s Roger Sherman Debate Society will host the annual Northeastern Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) and Worlds Regional Championship, more commonly known as the Hat City Debates, on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23 and 24, 2013. The debates begin at 8 a.m. and run until about 8 p.m. on both days; the event is free and the public is invited to watch.

Registration for participants will be on Feb. 23 on the first floor of Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Breakfast and lunch will be provided both days, with vegan meal choices. The registration entry fee is $45 per person and checks should be made payable to the Roger Sherman Debate Society. There will also be a $30 fee for each uncovered round of judging, with three rounds per team. Past events have attracted teams including from Cornell University, Boston College and the United State Military Academy at West Point.

The tournament will feature six rounds of cross-examination policy debate in novice and junior varsity, using the 2012-2013 CEDA/National Debate Tournament (NDT) topic:

“Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially reduce restrictions on and/or substantially increase financial incentives for energy production in the United States of one or more of the following: coal, crude oil, natural gas, nuclear power, solar power, wind power.”

The Hat City Debates will also feature a world’s division and will follow all World Universities Debating Championship rules (WUDC). Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at an institution may compete or judge. Undergraduates who are familiar with the event may be used as judges. Registration entries can be emailed to debate@wcsu.edu.
