Transfer Students

June Orientation

Transfer students should meet with an adviser and register for classes as soon as they are accepted.  Please contact the Office of the Registrar in the Old Main Administrative Building, 1st floor or the Academic Advisement Center, Higgins Hall 215 to find out who your adviser is or to make an appointment.  Any questions can be directed to (203) 837-9206 or (203) 837-8397.

Do I really need to attend June Orientation?
The short answer is yes, we definitely recommend you do.  Here is the long answer: as a transfer student you should already have your class schedule, your ID, your computer and email accounts.  And having been a college student before, you may think you already know a lot and don't need to go.  However, at Western orientation is about more than that.  The evening program on Day1 connects you with other students.  You talk with orientation leaders and students from several student organizations to learn more about what student life and the culture on campus is like, how to get involved and get connected.  You eat pizza together, watch a comedian, and play Bingo.  Then you sleep in the dorm (the cost is $35) and have breakfast in the morning.  All  of that is meant to help you make friends and get excited about coming to Western.  The program in the morning continues these activities, then includes a short welcome by the president and dean of your school, and an academic program where you may learn more about your chosen major (different departments handle this section differently).  Lunch afterwards in the cafeteria may help you meet more of your faculty and fellow students.  And afternoon workshops are geared toward specific topics like financial aid or housing and especially transfer students.

We are not forcing you to attend, but we sincerely believe that orientation will be beneficial and fun for all new students at Western - commuter, resident, transfer, and non-traditional alike.

Welcome Week

We have learned over the years that most transfer students prefer to be just part of the group so we encourage you to take part in all of the orientation events we offer and in particular attend your residence hall orientation or the commuter orientation during Welcome Week.  If you need any help in academic matters, please feel free to contact the Student Affairs office and we'll be happy to put you in touch with an adviser.

How to get connected at Western

In beginning your education at Western, it is important to get connected with both your faculty and your peers.  To that end there are a number of activities that we suggest you consider attending.  For example, every Thursday you could attend the Midtown Coffeehouse at 8pm in Alumni Hall.  The evening usually starts with an hour of open mic, followed by a featured performer.  The Coffeehouse is always free and sandwiches, soda and, of course, coffee are always on the house.

On some Fridays you could attend the PAC Movie Night usually scheduled for 8pm in the Student Center Theater.  This event is also free to all students and a fun way to see a movie a second time or even the first if you’ve missed it in the theatres.  Friday After Hours takes place from 10pm to midnight in Alumni Hall and usually features food and some kind of fun theme.

Perhaps the best way to connect with Western is at Clubs Carnival.  Virtually every student organization will have a table to present their program to new students.  In addition, there will be music and amusements.  Consider joining the Older Wiser Learners (O.W.L.s) or, if you are commuting, the Commuter Student Organization.  There is something for everyone and every age so sign up for email notifications and join one organization or many, depending on your available time.

And at the end of the day, you can relax and unwind and have a cup of Starbuck's coffee at The Daily Grind in the Westside Campus Center which is open most afternoons and nights.

For additional activities and events please check on Western’s event calendar.
