DANBURY, CONN. — The Western Connecticut State University Department of Theatre Arts will usher winter away by staging the rock musical “Spring Awakening,” opening Wednesday, Feb. 27, and running through Saturday, March 16, 2013. Based on the work of German dramatist Frank Wedekind with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, “Spring Awakening” depicts 19th-century German teenagers in their journey to self-discovery and “awakening.”

Since its 2006 Broadway premiere at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, “Spring Awakening” has won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor. The production also garnered four Drama Desk Awards and the original cast album received a Grammy Award.

“Spring Awakening” will open the last weekend of February and run through mid-March. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 27 (gala following) and 28 (high school night); at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16. There will also be matinee shows at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 and 16, and Sunday, March 10. Performances will be in the Berkshire Theatre on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The public is invited. Tickets will be $25 for general admission and $15 for seniors and non-WCSU students with I.D. WCSU students with a valid I.D will be admitted free. To purchase tickets, go to www.wcsu.edu/tickets or call (203) 837-TIXX. Due to its controversial subject matter, this play is not recommended for children.

Director Sal Trapani, chairman of the WCSU Department of Theatre Arts, said the play explores the emotional inner lives of the characters. His approach to directing this production has been to “let the issues in the play speak for themselves.”

Trapani promised that fans of the musical will be surprised by the way he and musical director Tom Cuffari have found a way to significantly enhance the sound in the Grammy Award-winning score.

The cast includes Vincent McCoy, of Torrington, as Melchior; Austin Carnes, of Southbury, as Moritz; Josh Hahn, of Derby, as Hanschen; Mick Gloss, of Stratford, as Otto; Tyler Caisse, of Wolcott, as Ernst; Anthony Paparello, of Bristol, as Georg; Anthony Mendoza, of Brewster, N.Y., as Adult Man; Anna Giordano, of Clinton, as Wendla; Katie Rudnicki, of South Meriden, and Audrey Twitchell, of Westport, as Ilse; Alexis Willoughby, of Gaylordsville, and Corinne Marshall, of Prospect, as Marta; Michelle O’Konis, of Stafford, as Thea; Theresa Curran, of Shelton, and Anna Morse, of Cheshire, as Anna; and Casey Perruzzi, of Stratford, as Adult Woman.
