JAMES HEFFNER

Ever since he was an eighth-grader at Bethel Middle School, James Heffner wanted to be a teacher. As a high school student, he volunteered as a teacher’s assistant at the middle school and eventually learned to correct papers and plan class lessons.
When it came time for college, Heffner relied on the advice of the many teachers and advisers who had inspired him — and they all said WestConn was the place for him.

“They said WestConn has the best quality education program around — that’s what sold me,” said the 20-year-old secondary education major. “WestConn was the only school I applied to.”

Since coming to WestConn two years ago, Heffner has made himself a part of the campus community; he is the vice president of internal affairs of the Student Government Association, president and tournament director of the university’s Mock Trial Association and is vice president of the campus RotarAct. But, Heffner says, he wouldn’t be able to do all that he does without the help of scholarships.

Heffner is the recipient of a four-year $20,000 scholarship from the Danbury Rotary Club and mostly recently was awarded a $1,500 scholarship from Sodexo.

“Without scholarships I would have to work full time and go to school full time,” Heffner said. “I wouldn’t be able to do everything I do at WestConn. Scholarships are important because they give the recipients more of an appreciation that others are investing in them to do well. Scholarships benefit everyone and give students a better incentive to do well in school.”

As far as giving back, Heffner has already made a commitment to becoming an outstanding educator and credits WestConn for helping him to further develop his leadership skills. He said he loves the sense of community that WestConn’s smaller campus offers.

“So many opportunities have come my way,” he said. “Without scholarships, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.”
